I was playing dartboard the other day. Suddenly, Stefan came up and said ” your dart throwing isn’t straight, and that’s why you couldn’t hit the bullseye.

I said ” I know, man, but I’m new. Would you teach me how to throw darts straight?’

But wait! Don’t think this is that easy. If it was, then everyone would be a dart expert. Tag along to learn more about it.

How to Throw Darts Straight

– Now it’s time to talk about throwing the dart straight. Do you know what the demands are for throwing darts?” 

-I don’t know the details.

-If you are a beginner, you should know them. The main three demands of Darts are precision, concentration, and technique. Well, I will tell you about throwing darts with these three demands.

Step 1- Setup For Throwing Darts

Let’s start with setup. To throw darts perfectly, you should be aware of the distance, lighting, and position of the dartboard.

  • Distance from the dartboard: The standard distance from the dartboard to you is 7-8 feet for both the soft-tip and steel-tip darts. 
  • Lighting: Proper lighting is crucial for throwing darts. Your surroundings need clear visibility, so make sure you have the proper lighting. You can do this by putting a light above it, about 6 to 12 inches away. Make sure the light doesn’t make shadows on the dartboard. This will increase the possibility of hitting the bullseye.
  • Position of the dartboard: Hang the dartboard about 5-7 feet from the floor, with the bullseye included. But that distance also depends on your height. The throwing line should be around 7 feet 9.25 inches away from the wall or 8 feet if you’re playing with soft-tip darts. This line is also called the Oche or toe line. If someone is playing in a wheelchair, the dartboard should be about 4 feet 6 inches from the floor.

Note: Remember that all those numbers depend on your psychic and your indoor environment.

Step 2- Getting Into the Position 

Getting into the position to throw darts is called stance. Proper stance is part of concentration. But as a newbie, you may find it difficult to get into the final position.

Stand facing the dartboard: Find the perfect distance from your dartboard. However, the distance depends on some factors. Escpisally dartboard metarials impact the most. For steel-tipped darts, stand about 7 feet 9 1/4 inches away. If the floor is uneven, measure diagonally to the bullseye from where you stand; it should be about 9 feet 7 1/2 inches away. For soft-tipped darts, stand about 8 feet away.

Forward your dominant foot: After standing slightly forward, forward your dominant foot. Remember the right foot for the right-handed player and the left foot for the left-handed player. This will help you balance yourself during the throwing motion. 

Relaxed posture: You should maintain a comfortable posture throughout your body, with your shoulders towards the dartboard. Your shoulders and the dartboard would form a perfect 90-degree angle. Same deal with the line from your front foot to your back foot. But let’s face it, most of us aren’t contortionists. So, we gotta find a middle ground.

Distributing weight: You need to distribute your body weight between both legs. This balanced position helps stabilize your body and ensures that you are not leaning too much to one side. You should keep your shoulders and hips straight while throwing darts.

Step 3- Perfecting Your Grip and Aim

Holding the Dart: Holding the dart is part of the technique and plays an important role in hand control. It’s best to experiment with different grip styles, like the pencil grip or the three-finger grip. Well, do you know about these two gripes?

Let me tell you,

  1. Pencil grip: Hold the pencil steady with your thumb, index, and middle fingers. Let your ring and little fingers rest comfortably on the table. Keep a space between your index finger and thumb. Your wrist should be slightly bent back.
  2. Three-finger grip: This grip provides better control of your hand. To do that, hold the dart with your thumb, index, and middle fingers. Your thumb supports from below, the index sits on top, and the middle finger supports the end. Your pinky and ring fingers give extra support. Remember to keep your wrist steady. Position your thumb and index finger farthest back on the dart, called thrusters. Put the joint of your index finger into the barrel and your thumb underneath to secure the dart. Hold the dart further back for better control. Using chalk can help absorb oils on your fingers and give you a better grip.

Tip: Gripping the Dart firmly but not too tightly because a tight grip can impact your throwing. It will pressurize your wrist and hand.

Focusing on your target area: After gripping the dirt, you need to direct your focus to the target area of the dartboard. You may aim for a specific score or combination.

Using eyes to aim: It depends totally on you. You are allowed to use your dominant eye, and some players feel comfortable using two eyes as well. I suggest experimenting to see which style suits you. 

Aligning your eyes, shoulders, and throwing arms can ensure consistent aim and maximize your chance of hitting successfully.

Step 4- Backswing Your Hand and Releasing the Dart 

Now, you need to calm yourself, fix your target on the board, and then bring the dart back smoothly. Make sure your hand is steady. This motion will help you release the dart suddenly. Relax your grip before releasing the dart. Unnecessary pressure can impact your smooth release. Now, release the dart with a flick of your wrist.

Now release your darts at speeds ranging from 5.8 to 6.7 meters per second, just a smidge before their hand hits the highest point of its circular motion, which usually happens within a radius of about 0.5 to 0.7 meters.

Now, imagine you’re standing about 2.37 meters away from a dartboard, and it’s about 1.73 meters high. To hit that bullseye, the best move is to throw overarm, launching the dart at an angle between 17 and 37 degrees before your arm goes straight up. The perfect speed for this throw is around 5.1 to 5.5 meters per second, and you want to let go of the dart about 35 to 44 milliseconds before your hand reaches the highest point.

Surprisingly, throwing overarm is actually 7 to 20% more accurate than going underarm. If you swing your arm a bit wider and throw a tad faster, say with a radius of 0.8 meters and a speed of 5.5 meters per second, your accuracy gets a serious boost, matching what we see in real-life dart throwing.

Tip: Avoid jerky movements during backswing. A steady backswing is the foundation of a successful throw and hit.

Step- 5 Follow-through

Follow-through is the last phase of throwing darts. it is equally crucial for you what I said above. After releasing the dart, you should continue the natural motion of your hand toward the target. It helps to maintain the fluidity and hit the scoring areas.

  • Mental Focus: Concentration and mental composure play a significant role. Overthinking or getting nervous can disrupt your technique.
  • Equipment Consistency: Stick with the same set of darts, especially when practising. Different darts have different weights and balances, which can alter your throw.
  • Routine: Develop a consistent pre-throw routine. This helps you mentally prepare and align your body for the throw.
  • Practice: Regular practice helps develop muscle memory, ensuring that every part of the throwing process becomes second nature.
  • Feedback: Consider recording your throws or practising in front of a mirror. This can help you spot inconsistencies in your technique. Feedback from experienced players can also be invaluable.

With consistent mechanics and focused practice, your throws will develop a straight, accurate flight path over time. Proper technique and repetition are the keys to straight darts.
